What the Winston-Salem survey should resolve
Send photographs of the entire staircase, every landing and the areas beyond the first and last step. Include doors that open across the proposed rail and explain where a walker or wheelchair will be used. Ask the assessor to show the final parking positions and how the passenger will enter and leave the seat, rather than discussing only the number of stairs.
The regional businesses offer different equipment and support routes, so request a proposal that names the actual chair and rail. State whether any powered controls, folding rail or separate preparation are included. If someone must remain in a wheelchair, ask whether a platform lift or another access solution should be assessed. A seated stairlift should not be selected solely because its initial quote appears lower.
BanCar · Lifeway Mobility CharlotteA documented rental package with local confirmation still needed
Lifeway’s Charlotte rental page expressly includes Winston-Salem in its serving area. It describes a two-month minimum, installation and removal, service for the first twelve months, and used Bruno Elan and Elite straight equipment. The page says a manual folding rail is the add-on option for that package. Confirm the current model, feature needs and suitability before assuming a rental will work.
The published terms do not provide one universal Winston-Salem rate. Ask for the initial payment, later monthly charge and what happens if equipment is collected early or the need becomes permanent. Stannah separately identifies a rental program through American Mobility, but it does not publish an equivalent contract. Treat that as a second enquiry route with its own pricing and conditions.
Lifeway Mobility Charlotte · American Mobility Bath and RampRegional visits and service should be planned together
BanCar’s own accessibility page places it in Greensboro and explicitly includes Winston-Salem and High Point in its Piedmont Triad coverage. It describes assessment, equipment selection, installation and service for stairlifts and platform lifts. Ask whether the same team will handle the complete project and what the installation address means for scheduling, travel and later repairs.
Lifeway’s serving branch is in Charlotte, while American Mobility’s manufacturer-described showroom is in the Raleigh area. No Winston-Salem city showroom was verified here. Confirm the precise visit address and the equipment on display before travelling. When a branch is regional, written return-service arrangements are at least as important as the demonstration: ask who answers a fault report and how a technician is dispatched.
BanCar · Lifeway Mobility Charlotte · American Mobility Bath and RampThe city accessibility program is a conditional loan
Winston-Salem’s Lending page describes a Physical Accessibility Program with assistance up to $15,000 as a deferred, zero-interest loan, forgiven over five years under its terms. It requires recorded loan documents and lists ownership, occupancy, income and other restrictions. Listed work includes ramps, grab bars and related access improvements; the page does not establish a stairlift entitlement.
Ask Lending to review the exact proposed equipment and explain the repayment triggers before planning around assistance. The page combines several programs and contains mixed date language elsewhere, so verify the current application period for the specific program. Keep a supplier quotation separate from the approval process, and do not assume that an application or preliminary screening authorizes privately arranged work.
Winston-Salem Lending programs ↗Forsyth County repair routes do not all cover the same places
The county’s housing rehabilitation page distinguishes its funding streams. HOME and Essential Single Family Rehabilitation descriptions exclude properties within Winston-Salem and Walkertown limits. Urgent Repair is instead described as available to residents across Forsyth County, subject to its very-low-income and qualifying-need criteria. A city resident should therefore ask about the named program rather than accept a blanket county exclusion.
Those are housing-repair programs with eligibility review, approved work and loan terms—not automatic funding for a stairlift purchase. Ask whether the mobility problem fits the current scope, whether funds are available and who may carry out authorized work. Use the property’s actual jurisdiction, not only the postal address, when contacting city or county staff and gathering the household documents they request.
