Stairlift buying guide
Straight stairlifts.
Get a quote for a stairlift on one uninterrupted flight. A straight rail can make the equipment choice simpler, but the survey still needs to check the rider, landings, doorways and room left for other people using the stairs.

At a glance.
- Best starting point
- One straight flight with no turn or intermediate landing along the required route.
- Main fit question
- Can the rider sit, travel, swivel and get off at both ends with the proposed chair and rail?
- Options to price
- Ask about new, professionally reconditioned and rental equipment using the same assessed installation scope.
Will a straight stairlift fit?
A narrow folded chair is only one measurement. The assessor also needs the occupied chair space, the rider’s knees and feet, and room to turn at the upper landing. Acorn publishes 26 inches as its Acorn 130 stair-width guidance, with a survey still required. That is a model-specific reference, not a minimum that approves every staircase.
Show any door beside the first step. Bruno’s Elan offers a folding rail, power swivel and power footrest as options. Have the proposal identify which are needed, which are included and how the rail behaves when the chair is parked.

What should the installed quote include?
Bruno’s current US guidance starts around $4,000 for a base straight model and explicitly says installation adds to that figure. This is a manufacturer example, not a nationwide installed average. The final proposal should include the selected rail, controls, delivery, fitting and demonstration, with tax and separate preparation identified.
Compare the complete cash price before comparing monthly payments. Keep the rail route and required functions consistent: a cheaper proposal with a different swivel, parking arrangement or equipment condition is a different purchase.
New, reconditioned or rented?
Reconditioned should describe actual work. Stannah, for example, says its process includes replacement batteries and necessary component changes. Ask your seller for the proposed unit’s model, condition record and applicable warranty; one company’s refurbishment description does not establish another seller’s standards.
Rental agreements also differ. Stannah describes an initial payment covering a defined rental period, followed by optional monthly extensions in its direct-service areas. Ask for your address’s minimum total, removal terms and purchase-conversion calculation. Compare the intended duration and a longer fallback period.

Charging and service still matter
Battery power does not remove the need for charging. Bruno’s indoor straight models charge along the rail, but other configurations can differ. Have the installer identify the charging arrangement and demonstrate normal parking. Do not assume an unlimited number of rides during an outage.
Keep the parts warranty, labour cover and service travel charges together. Ask who repairs the proposed model locally and whether those terms differ for used or rented equipment. Plan the demonstration for the person who will actually use the lift.
